‘Grow with us’ is the inviting welcome to new volunteers at the Thrift Shop of Hampstead.
“We are growing,” said Rose Gates, manager of the thrift store. “We need more store organizers, cashiers, and volunteers to sort incoming merchandise.”
The Thrift Shop of Hampstead, operated by the Hampstead Women’s Club, is a community-centered organization. Residents donate gently-used items. The thrift store sorts, displays and sells the donated merchandise. The proceeds are in turn donated to various charities, civic organizations, schools and a scholarship fund.
The store welcomes community members to come into the store and volunteer for a few hours before they make a commitment. Our volunteers have a good time working and laughing together.
Volunteers can work in departments of the store in which they feel most comfortable, such as the infant room, house wares, or the boutique of designer clothing, just to name a few.
“I like pairing volunteers with their interests,” said Gates, adding that many volunteers bring a friend to work alongside.
“It’s a fun atmosphere. There’s no pressure. We have a good time because we know we are helping the community.”
Thrift store volunteers also enjoy the activities of the women’s club, such as an annual outing and the Christmas luncheon.
Volunteers generally work three hours per week. However, the schedule is flexible, said Gates.
For more information about the many volunteer activities at the Thrift Shop of Hampstead, stop by the store Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays or Saturdays from 9 am to 3 pm. The store is located at the Hampstead Community Building, 14435 US Hwy. 17.
