The Hampstead Women’s Club presented $2,000 scholarships to five seniors at Topsail High School. The seniors are Michela Vitagliano, Tyler Hagan, Samantha Bollinger, Adam Crowell and Laura Van Leuven.
The Hampstead Women’s Club has awarded scholarships since 2000. To date the club has given $98,000 in scholarships to local high school seniors.
“This year we had 17 applicants,” said Diane Mangus, chairman of the women’s club scholarship committee. “They were all worthy candidates for the scholarships.”
Mangus said the scholarship committee, which included Marjorie Mallard and Marilyn Brooks, interviewed all 17 of the applicants. They were so impressed with the quality of student applicants, they asked the Hampstead Women’s Club board of directors for an additional scholarship. The board reviewed the club’s finances and decided to award five $2,000 scholarships instead of four.
“We were pleased we were able to support another student with an additional scholarship,” said Patricia Truscello, president of the Hampstead Women’s Club.
Treasurer Betsy Thomas said the scholarships are paid directly to the college or university of the student’s choice.
“We have been told numerous times by parents their children could not have pursued a higher education had it not been for the Hampstead Women’s Club scholarships,” said Truscello.
“We are able to award scholarships because of the money raised through the Hampstead Thrift Store,” said Truscello. “Without the generous support of the community, we could not give $98,000 in scholarships over the last 13 years.”
Truscello said donations of gently used household items, clothing, accessories, furniture, books and baby and children’s items are sorted, priced and sold at the Hampstead Thrift Store. The proceeds from the thrift store are donated back into the community through scholarships and charitable gifts to schools and non-profit organizations.
The Hampstead Thrift Store is located at 14435 U.S. Hwy. 17. The Hampstead Women’s Club is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. For more information about the Hampstead Women’s Club or thrift store, call 910-270-9510 or go online to www.hampsteadwomensclub.org.
